Theater Theatron – The Small Theater with the Big Questions
Theater Theatron was founded in 2001 and is a socially engaged theater aimed at audiences aged 15 and up.
In our productions, we give voice to what cannot be silenced – stories that must be shared with our audience. The stage becomes our platform to reflect on and challenge contemporary issues, exploring themes that deeply resonate with us: separation, belonging, identity, love, and dreams.
In recent years, we have placed life stories at the center of our work, weaving personal experiences with the magic of theater to create performances that move, challenge, and open new perspectives.
For the past ten years, our home has been Scenkonsthuset Bastionen in Malmö. We also perform in Lund before touring across southern Sweden. So far, we have produced sixteen performances, embarked on six international tours, hosted numerous guest performances, and conducted several workshops focused on young adults, both nationally and internationally.
Theatron aims to create performances that serve as meeting places where boundaries dissolve—between actors and audiences, between us and them. A space where dialogue remains open, honest, and ever-evolving.
Our ambition is not to provide answers but to pose questions that spark reflection and thought. We explore the intersection between theater and reality, challenge how performing arts mirror society, and create spaces for new perspectives.
By elevating real-life stories, we build bridges, foster dialogue, and make the audience an active part of the theater experience—where listening and participation take center stage. We hold a firm belief that even small actions can influence and contribute to a better world.
Theatron aspires to initiate international projects and act as a bridge to the Western Balkans, where a strong network lies. Our goal is to be a relevant voice, tackling critical reflections on contemporary issues that emerge in conversations between Northern and Southern Europe.
In Sweden, we participated in the 2015 Scenkonstbiennalen (Performing Arts Biennale) in Malmö with The White Crow – Eichmann in Jerusalem by Donald Freed, directed by Tomas Lindström. This production remains a source of pride, and actor Zeljko Santrac was nominated for the Thalia Prize in 2016 for his performance.
At an international theater festival in Serbia in 2015, Life in Two Parts received high recognition, with Tomas Lindström awarded Best Director and Suzanna Santrac honored as Best Actress.
In 2024, Birth Certificate – Danilo Kišwas performed at a theatre festival in Sarajevo and received great acclaim for its unique interpretation and emotional depth. Danilo Kiš was the last Yugoslav writer – an artist of strong moral integrity who remained true to his principles, regardless of the consequence.
Theatron is committed to making our performances accessible to everyone.
Scenkonsthuset Bastionen in Malmö offers wheelchair-accessible seating and an accessible restroom in the foyer.
Teater Theatron is funded through a combination of public grants at national, regional, and municipal levels. Between 2018 and March 2021, the organisation successfully led a major project funded by the Swedish Inheritance Fund (Allmänna Arvsfonden), with a total budget of approximately SEK 6,500,000. HERO SCHOOL (HJÄLTESKOLAN)(www.hjalteskolan.se) aimed to strengthen young people’s communication skills, self-awareness, and social participation through the performing arts.
In addition, Theatron has received support through various EU grants, including Erasmus+ Youth Cooperation Partnerships (KA210-YOU) during 2021–2022 and Erasmus+ Youth Cooperation Partnerships (KA220-YOU) for the period 2025–2027, in collaboration with partners from Slovenia and Serbia.
In 2024, a collaboration was initiated with NBV Syd and Culture for Older Adults within the City of Malmö. The organisation also generates income through ticket sales and partnerships with theatre associations, ensuring financial sustainability and operational flexibility.
Theatron’s Zeljko Santrac is one of the initiators of TC FriVux, a platform aimed at highlighting and artistically developing independent theatre for adult audiences, both in Sweden and internationally. The initiative creates meeting spaces where theatre practitioners can strengthen their networks and promote new collaborations between theatres working with adult audiences
